HONORING COMMUNITIES, RANGERS, AND EVERY VOICE FOR NATURE

Because Nature Thrives When We Stand Together

To those who always accompany and support WildAct on every journey,

Join WildAct as we reflect on a season of quiet unyielding dedication and collective impacts. From the resilient footsteps of forest patrollers to the curious minds of young conservationists, our collective efforts have reached across forests, classrooms, and communities.

This quarter, we removed over 400 wildlife traps, empowered female conservation leaders, and inspired over hundreds of youths from Hanoi to the Red River Delta. These are not just milestones – they are proof of what’s possible when nature’s guardians stand together. These victories are made possible through relentless fieldwork and growing public awareness. But this mission needs you, as you, too, can help make a lasting difference with your support. Be part of the solution and give wildlife a chance to survive.

Species and Habitats – Honoring the quiet yet unyielding Footsteps

GUARDIANS OF CHƯ YANG SIN AWARDS 2ND SEASON: HONORING THE RESILIENT FOOTSTEPS PROTECTING VIETNAM’S NATURE https://wildact-vn.org/guardians-of-chu-yang-sin-awards-2nd-season-honoring-the-resilient-footsteps-protecting-vietnams-nature/ https://wildact-vn.org/guardians-of-chu-yang-sin-awards-2nd-season-honoring-the-resilient-footsteps-protecting-vietnams-nature/#respond Fri, 11 Apr 2025 04:15:16 +0000 https://wildact-vn.org/?p=2453 April 4th, 2025 – Vietnam Wildlife Action Center (WildAct) in collaboration with Chư Yang Sin National Park (CYS National Park), launched the second season of the Guardians of Chư Yang Sin Awards, with sponsorship from the Conservation Vietnam fund.

As one of Vietnam’s biodiversity hotspots facing severe threats, CYS National Park has only 100 dedicated forest rangers responsible for nearly 60,000 hectares of forest. This means each ranger is tasked with protecting approximately 600 hectares of forest – a daunting responsibility that highlights the immense pressures and challenges they face.

Having worked closely with these guardians of the forest on multiple patrols, Mr. Lê Quốc Thưởng, Species and Habitat Program Manager at WildAct, shared: “For rangers, enduring grueling treks over rugged mountains and through treacherous streams for days on end is just part of the job. Many ranger stations remain severely under-resourced, with some even lacking access to clean water, making an already harsh reality even more challenging.”

Beyond these harsh living conditions, rangers constantly face dangers from illegal loggers and poachers. Cases such as a ranger being shot in 2018 or seven rangers narrowly escaping an attack in early 2022 underscore these risks. Yet, driven by passion and commitment, they persist in safeguarding Chư Yang Sin’s vast forests.

With deforestation and wildlife poaching on the rise, recognizing and honoring the dedication of rangers has never been more urgent. Following the success of the first Guardians of Chư Yang Sin Awards in March 2024, season 2 marks a significant turn by expanding participation. In addition to acknowledging the contributions of rangers and forest protection teams, this year’s awards also celebrate the tireless efforts of local communities in preserving their ancestral lands.

Dr. Trang Nguyen, Founder and Director of WildAct, emphasized the spirit of the awards: “This year, we continue to stand alongside the guardians of the forest, supporting them as they navigate their journey of protecting Vietnam’s natural heritage – a journey filled with challenges, dangers, and also deep fulfillment. Each story reflects a unique perspective, yet all share the same mission: to resiliently safeguard our nation’s green lungs and biodiversity. Behind every protected forest lies grueling patrols, multiple hardships, along with the profound joy of dedicating oneself to preserving every stretch of wilderness and the creatures that call it home.

Over the course of three months, the awards received nearly 60 nominations, showcasing the relentless efforts to protect Chư Yang Sin’s wildlife and ecosystems. After a thorough evaluation and selection process, ten awards were presented to outstanding individuals and teams for their exceptional contributions:

Successful Rewildling in Early 2025 https://wildact-vn.org/successful-rewildling-in-early-2025/ https://wildact-vn.org/successful-rewildling-in-early-2025/#respond Fri, 11 Apr 2025 03:59:22 +0000 https://wildact-vn.org/?p=2441 In the first quarter of 2025, two successful rewilding activities were conducted, marking significant progress in efforts to rehabilitate and return rescued animals to their natural habitat.

On February 21, 2025, the Dak Lak Elephant Conservation, Animal Rescue, and Forest Protection Management Center, in collaboration with Chu Yang Sin National Park and the Krong Bông District Forest Protection Department, released 13 rescued wildlife individuals back into the wild. Among them was a Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica), one of the world’s most trafficked mammals due to high demand for its scales and meat. Despite its protection under international and Vietnamese law, pangolin populations continue to decline due to poaching and habitat loss. Other released animals included macaques, reticulated pythons, and several species of turtles.

Most recently, on March 4, 2025, the Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Department, in coordination with Chu Yang Sin National Park, successfully released 42 wildlife individuals from 11 species. This included another Java pangolin, a leopard cat, multiple species of turtles, and large reptiles such as water monitor lizards and Burmese pythons. Notably, many of these animals were voluntarily handed over by local residents, reflecting a growing awareness and commitment to wildlife conservation.

As a conservation partner of Chu Yang Sin National Park, WildAct actively supports rescue and release efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade and promote community engagement in protecting Vietnam’s biodiversity. These successful releases highlight the importance of collaboration between local authorities, conservation organizations, and the public in reducing wildlife consumption and restoring endangered species to their natural environment.

Q1/2025 PATROL UPDATE: HARSH CHALLENGES, UNWAVERING DETERMINATION https://wildact-vn.org/q1-2025-patrol-update-harsh-challenges-unwavering-determination/ https://wildact-vn.org/q1-2025-patrol-update-harsh-challenges-unwavering-determination/#respond Fri, 11 Apr 2025 03:29:27 +0000 https://wildact-vn.org/?p=2435 As 2025 begins, our Community Conservation Team (CCT) continues to face daunting challenges. Extreme weather conditions and increasing poaching pressure have made their mission more arduous than ever. Yet, step by step, they press forwarddismantling traps, destroying poaching camps, and safeguarding life deep in the forest.

Harsh Weather, Grueling Patrols

In the first months of the year, unpredictable weather has made patrols even more demanding. Freezing temperatures, unseasonal downpours, and strong winds toppling trees have created obstacles at every turn. The relentless conditions leave the team soaked, their meals cold, yet their resolve remains unshaken.

Despite these challenges, the CCT has persevered. In just Q1, they have patrolled 230 km of forest terrain, dedicating 134 hours to ensuring the safety of wildlife—undaunted by the dangers they encounter.

Poaching Pressure and Climate Change

Patrol findings reveal a worrying surge in illegal hunting activity. A sharp increase in snares, particularly wire traps and steel-jaw traps, poses a severe threat, causing fatal injuries to wildlife.

Meanwhile, climate change is compounding the problem. Unstable weather patterns not only affect patrol operations but also disrupt wildlife migration and behaviors, making animals more vulnerable to hunters.

Over 400 Traps Removed, Poaching Camps Destroyed

Despite these immense challenges, our CCT achieved remarkable results in Q1/2025:

  • 406 traps removed, reducing threats to endangered wildlife
  • 6 poaching camps dismantled, disrupting illegal hunting networks
  • 1 homemade firearm confiscated, minimizing risks of wildlife poaching

These figures stand as a testament to the relentless dedication of our CCT in protecting the forest.

CCT Marches On—Your Support is Needed

To sustain their efforts, CCT needs the support of the community. Worn-out boots, drenched clothing, and freezing nights in the forest cannot break their determination—but they need resources to keep going.

You can stand with our CCT by:

  • Providing financial or equipment support to improve their working conditions.
  • Spreading awareness to strengthen community action against wildlife crime.
  • Volunteering or offering expertise to contribute to conservation efforts.

Every contribution brings us closer to a safer future for nature. Join WildAct in empowering those who dedicate their lives to protecting our forests!

PROTECTING WILD BIRDS – SOLUTIONS FOR THE PRESENT AND FUTURE https://wildact-vn.org/protecting-wild-birds-solutions-for-the-present-and-future/ https://wildact-vn.org/protecting-wild-birds-solutions-for-the-present-and-future/#respond Fri, 11 Apr 2025 03:16:43 +0000 https://wildact-vn.org/?p=2432 Illegal bird trapping is causing a severe decline in wild bird populations. To address this crisis, conservation experts from Vietnam, Thailand, and China gathered for an online seminar hosted by Oriental Bird Club and BirdLife International Asia on January 17, 2025. Representing WildAct, Dr. Trang Nguyen shared efforts to protect wild birds and discussed innovative solutions for the future.

Wild Birds at Risk of Extinction

Bird trapping has become increasingly rampant in recent years. According to BirdLife International, millions of migratory birds are captured annually across Southeast Asia. Invisible mist nets are stretched across migration paths, trapping countless rare species.

In Vietnam, hunting hotspots are concentrated in coastal areas, wetlands, and key migratory stopover sites. Despite government interventions, illegal hunting persists due to the high market demand for pet birds, food, and traditional rituals.

Key Threats to Wild Birds

Rampant mist netting: Thin, nearly invisible nets trap birds mid-flight. Hunters also use decoy birds or artificial sounds to lure them.

Habitat loss: Deforestation and wetland destruction leave migratory birds with fewer safe havens.

High market demand: The pet trade, exotic food industry, and cultural practices drive excessive hunting.

Initial Efforts and Ongoing Challenges

Conservation organizations like WildAct have taken critical steps to reduce illegal bird hunting, including:

Patrol collaborations to detect and remove hundreds of mist nets in key areas.

Awareness campaigns to educate communities on the ecological impact of bird hunting.

Empowering local communities, especially women, to engage in bird conservation efforts.

Despite positive progress, illegal trapping remains a complex challenge. Stronger measures and community involvement are essential for sustainable bird protection.

WildAct’s Key Conservation Strategies:

  • Stronger law enforcement: Partnering with local authorities to monitor hunting hotspots.
  • Education & awareness: Organizing real-world conservation programs for students, teachers, and communities.
  • Citizen science: Encouraging the public to report illegal bird hunting via the SMART monitoring app.
  • Innovative conservation solutions: Developing alternative livelihoods for local communities to reduce dependence on bird hunting.

Protecting wild birds is a shared responsibility. Join WildAct today to ensure a safe sky for our feathered friends!

A DAY AS A YOUNG CONSERVATIONIST WITH UNIS STUDENTS https://wildact-vn.org/a-day-as-a-young-conservationist-with-unis-students/ https://wildact-vn.org/a-day-as-a-young-conservationist-with-unis-students/#respond Fri, 11 Apr 2025 03:11:27 +0000 https://wildact-vn.org/?p=2426 On January 22, WildAct partnered with UNIS Hanoi to organize a hands-on conservation experience, allowing students to step into the role of young conservationists. Under the guidance of Trang Nguyen, WildAct’s founder, students gained practical knowledge about wildlife conservation and actively engaged in assessing animal welfare.

Hands-on Wildlife Conservation Experience

As part of the program, WildAct took UNIS students to a wildlife facility where they observed animals in real-life settings. More than just a field trip, this experience allowed them to understand wildlife habitats, behaviors, and the challenges these animals face.

Instead of relying on textbooks or online images, students witnessed firsthand the stark difference between animals in the wild and those in captivity. This experience deepened their understanding of animal welfare and why it’s crucial to protect animals in their natural environments.

Learning from Conservation Experts

Guided by Trang Nguyen, students practiced observation skills and learned how to assess animal welfare by identifying signs of stress or comfort. This activity sharpened their critical thinking and reinforced their responsibility toward nature.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Conservationists

Wildlife conservation is not just the responsibility of experts—it requires collective action, especially from the younger generation. WildAct believes that immersive experiences like these help students develop a strong awareness of humanity’s role in nature.

By delivering meaningful conservation messages, WildAct hopes to inspire future pioneers in wildlife protection.

Bringing Conservation Education to More Schools

WildAct aims to expand these hands-on experiences to more schools, integrating conservation knowledge into education for long-term impact. If your school is interested in environmental education programs, contact WildAct to bring these transformative experiences to your students!
